When I first decided to become a Dietitian most people did not know what a dietitian was. When I first started in private practice there were only a handful of others. Now thirty years later most people know what a dietitian is or at least have heard about the profession.
A qualified dietitian is also a nutritionist, but a nutritionist is not necessarily a dietitian. To be a dietitian requires further qualification. Dietetics is the application of diet for the treatment of diseases, such as Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc.
I started my working life in the public hospital field as Assistant Dietitian at the Royal Southern Memorial Hospital. I then moved to the Preston & Northcote Community Hospital as Senior Dietitian, a position I held for four years before I became Senior Dietitian at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
I left hospital work when my first child was born, however I continued to be involved in part time work until he started kindergarten, when I commenced in private practice. I now have several different practice locations and a busy, home visit-based, weight management & dietary service.
My aim now is to bring this successful service to a wider population via the internet. |
